Truck driver facing negligent driving charge in fatal Rt. 100 crash

UPDATE: This post was updated with new information at 6:15 p.m.

The driver of a tractor-trailer involved in a fatal crash on Vermont Route 100 this morning near the Moretown-Duxbury town line is in jail tonight and is scheduled for a court hearing on Friday in Barre, according to Vermont State Police.

In an update to earlier news of the crash that killed a Waitsfield woman, police said that after being discharged from Central Vermont Medical Center, 24-year-old Satnam Singh, of Brampton, Ontario, was taken into custody on a charge of gross negligent operation with death resulting.

His first stop was the Berlin state police barracks for processing before being transported to the Northeast Correctional Complex in St. Johnsbury where he is tonight for lack of $150,000 cash bail, police said.

Singh has been scheduled for arraignment on Friday afternoon in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in Barre, police said.

The update from state police also corrected the age of the victim in the fatal crash. Rosettta Weber was 39 years old, they noted.

Vermont Route 100 was reopened to traffic around 5 p.m., police said. The closure prompted a detour throughout the day that included school bus traffic to and from Harwood Union Middle/High School both for the morning and afternoon bus runs.

Fatal crash closes Vt. Rt. 100 near Duxbury-Moretown town line

Vermont Route 100 south of Harwood Union High School was closed for approximately 10 hours today following a fatal crash this morning between a tractor-trailer and a Subaru near the Moretown-Duxbury town line, according to Vermont State Police.

The incident happened soon after 6:30 a.m. when Rosetta Weber, 39, of Waitsfield, was traveling north on Rt. 100 and a tractor-trailer driven by 24-year-old Satnam Singh of Brampton, Ontario, was headed southbound, Trooper Robert Lemnah wrote in a news release.

Truck driver Singh “for reasons still under investigation, left his lane of travel and struck Weber’s vehicle head-on,” Lemnah reported.

Weber was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said, and Singh was transported to Central Vermont Medical Center with minor injuries. There were no other passengers in either vehicle, police said.

The crash occurred just south of the intersection with Ward Hill Road in Duxbury. At approximately 6:46 a.m., state police from the Berlin barracks and the Fatal Crash Reconstruction Team responded along with inspectors from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Crews from both Waterbury and Moretown fire departments and both Mad River Ambulance and Waterbury Ambulance Service responded as well.

Both vehicles came to rest off the east side of the road, police said. Weber was driving a 2015 Subaru XV Cross Trek; Singh was operating a 2019 Freightliner FM2. The weather and road conditions were both clear at the time of the crash and both drivers were wearing seatbelts, the police report noted.

This crash is still under investigation. State police ask that if any member of the public has information that could assist investigators, they should contact the Berlin barracks at 802-229-9191. Anonymous tips also can be submitted online at vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.

As of 12:30 p.m., the car had been removed from the scene, but DMV investigators were working at the crash site inspecting the tractor-trailer, according to state police Sgt. Alex Comtois.

Rt. 100 was reopened to traffic around 5 p.m., according to a Vermont Alert notification.
