It’s time to scour your cabinets, shelves, garages and sheds for those containers of unwanted cleaners and weed killers, old paint, batteries, and more to take to the Spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection at Crossett Brook Middle School on Saturday, May 18.

Organized by the Mad River Resource Management Alliance, the collection is free for residents of the alliance’s member towns of Fayston, Moretown, Waitsfield, Warren and Waterbury. Drop-off of architectural oil and latex paint, and primary batteries is free as well as an additional 10 gallons of liquid or 10 pounds of solids such as solvents, gasoline, glues, pesticides, etc. at no additional charge. After that, there is a $5 per unit fee.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Residents of communities outside of the alliance can participate for a $30 registration fee; there is no free disposal of the 10 additional units of waste for non-residents of the alliance.

Small businesses must preregister by May 15 indicating what they are planning to bring to this event so disposal costs can be determined. Business waste will only be accepted between 8 and 8:30 a.m. Preregister with an email to malterport@aol.com.

Thermostats and thermometers: People can drop off used mercury thermostats at the collection (they must include covers); they will receive information for a $5 rebate per thermostat. The event also will collect mercury fever thermometers and provide digital replacement thermometers, one per household.

A note on what the collection does NOT accept: No compressed gases, fire extinguishers, ammunition, explosives, medical waste or radioactive waste. It cannot take compact fluorescent lamps or fluorescent tubes – those can be disposed of at Bisbee’s Ace Hardware and Kenyons Variety in Waitsfield, Aubuchon Hardware in Moretown and Waterbury True Value Hardware. This collection does not accept tires or electronics.

The alliance will run another Household Hazardous Waste Collection in the fall on Saturday, Oct. 12, also at Crossett Brook Middle School.

A grant of $11,638 from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation supports projects in the alliance’s 2024 Solid Waste Implementation Program such as the household hazardous waste collections.

Composting note

For anyone who missed the April composting workshop at the Waterbury Public Library, another free workshop will be held on June 1 at the Waitsfield Municipal Building from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The alliance also has Soil Saver compost bins for purchase at a discounted price.
