Annual golf tournament to support Waterbury, Northfield ambulance services

On Sunday, Sept. 14, Waterbury Ambulance Service and Northfield Ambulance Volunteers will co-host the 9th Annual Podgwaite Memorial Golf Tournament at the Northfield Country Club.

The two first-responder agencies have collaborated on this annual event which began to support the Northfield Ambulance Volunteers in memory Betty Podgwaite, a former member of Northfield Ambulance who passed away from cancer in 2006. Betty was married to Mark Podgwaite, the former executive director of Waterbury Ambulance Service who died in October 2022.

The two nonprofit organizations now organize the event and evenly divide the proceeds. The groups have alternated the location each year between the two communities.

The tournament will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northfield Country Club. Registration for the 18-hole tournament opens at 8 a.m. with play starting at 9 a.m.

Registration is $100 per player, $400 per team. The fee includes use of a golf cart, greens fees, a post-event BBQ where results and awards will be announced. Players can purchase mulligans at the tournament, and there will be a 50/50 raffle.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers, as well as the Sportsmanship Award (last place). A highlight of the event is the Public Safety Award given to the lowest-scoring team comprised of mostly first responders (police, fire, EMS, dispatch, etc.) This year’s hole-in-one prize is a new motorcycle from Wilkins Harley Davidson.

Players and teams may register online, and organizers are still looking for sponsors to help with prize donations and hole sponsorships. Sponsorships are available at a variety of levels from $100 to $1,000. Prize donations will be included in a silent auction.

There are also opportunities for non-golfers to volunteer with tasks such as assisting with the putting contest, spotting for holes-in-one on a prize hole, selling mulligans and raffle tickets. No previous experience is necessary.

More information about the event, including registration and sponsorships, is online on the Podgwaite Memorial Golf Tournament website. Anyone unable to attend but wishing to support the fundraiser can make a donation on the registration site as well.

Direct any questions to event coordinator Chris Golder at 802-793-0255. Those wishing to volunteer should contact Golder as well.
