Duxbury Land Trust to hold annual meeting April 9

April 3, 2024 | By Waterbury Roundabout

Duxbury Land Trust’s annual meeting next week will feature a presentation to delve into the history of a part of North Duxbury where the trust recently acquired land to conserve.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on April 9 – in the cafeteria at Crossett Brook Middle School. The event will mark the trust’s 30th anniversary and celebrate the purchase it made in May 2023 of 57 acres at the base of Ridley Brook. The land is at the intersection of Camel’s Hump Road and River Road.

The group has invited P. Howard “Skip” Flanders to give a talk on the history of this part of North Duxbury focusing on founding families during the period from 1790 and 1950.

Using photos from his own collection and historical research, Flanders will delve into the stories of two Revolutionary War soldiers – one from Bradford, Vermont, the other a British Army deserter who fought for the Colonies.

Tying in the present-day land trust and its conservation purchase, Flanders will discuss how the Ridley Brook location was once part of a small, thriving village complete with a railroad station, post office and an inn for tourists. Now under the land trust’s ownership, the spot has been conserved in perpetuity and will soon become a gateway to Camel’s Hump State Park.

A retired engineer and lifelong resident of Waterbury, Flanders has a keen interest in and knowledge of Waterbury and Duxbury history. His ancestors include numerous early settlers in Duxbury.

The public is welcome to attend to enjoy the presentation and refreshments.
