July 9: Joe Davidian and the Lost Melody play a Tribute to Bill Evans

Throughout its 25-year musical partnership, The Lost Melody – comprised of native Vermont pianist Joe Davidian, bassist Jamie Ousley, and drummer Austin McMahon – has pursued the stylistic approach pioneered by the Bill Evans Trio in the 1960s with a balanced and equitable dialogue amongst its members. In homage to Evans on what would have been his 97th birthday, The Lost Melody plans a performance saluting the seminal artist’s timeless compositions and classic arrangements, plus originals dedicated to the beloved jazz master. Vermont oboist Elise Conti and bassoonist Rachael Elliott are joined by Boston pianist Jonathan Reddix. For their program, they plan an evening of classical music that blends summer pastoral and environmental themes and features contemporary artists including HyeKyung Lee, Padma Newsome and Thomas Kozumplik, alongside enduring classics such as Francis Poulenc’s beloved Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon.

July 15: Jazz Jam hosted by Nina Towne
The monthly Jazz Jam provides an opportunity for a community of all ages, from students to elders, to gather and play, sing, and hear jazz and socialize in an organized, relaxed, and welcoming atmosphere. Players join in on the songs others bring, and/or you can bring a few copies of sheet music for the tunes you want to call. Many tunes are called from The Real Books. Singers, please bring copies of lead sheets or sheet music for your tunes in your key.
Music from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Phoenix. Suggested donation: $10.

July 19: Skylark String Quartet
Based in northern Vermont, Skylark is an eclectic contemporary string ensemble with decades of experience in the professional music community.
Skylark’s sound and repertoire challenge the boundaries between classical and folk traditions, creating innovative and original works for all audiences. Influenced by the Nordic, Celtic and American traditions, Skylark’s music is melody-driven with unique energy, irresistible flair and undeniable beauty.
In addition to their vibrant quartet concerts, Skylark is an eager collaborator with recent performances with Guster, Henry Jamison, Mary Bonhag, the Solaris vocal ensemble, and an album recording with jazz trumpeter Connor Young.
Skylark’s musicians are:
Violinist, teacher and curator Jane Kittredge, a prolific ensemble player, graduate of the Mannes College of Music, member of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and violin professor at UVM’s School of the Arts.
Violist Ana Ruesink, an active freelance musician performing with orchestras and chamber groups throughout the region. With degrees from Swarthmore College and UVM, she teaches viola from her home and at the UVM School of the Arts.
Ben Lively is a versatile violinist and multi-instrumentalist with a wide-ranging background including classical, jazz, bluegrass, and tango music. His degrees are from Middlebury College and Parisian jazz conservatory Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood.
John Dunlop’s more than 30-year career includes principal cello with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and many other regional ensembles. He teaches the next generation of cellists at his private studio in Richmond.

July 24: Music in the Alley with LA LOVO
The second of three free summer Music in the Alley concerts happens on Friday, July 24, in Jack’s Alley on Stowe Street (next door to Stowe Street Emporium); the Phoenix Gallery and Music Hall is the rain location.
July’s artist is LA LOVO playing cross-cultural Afro-Latin grooves and Colombian folk with rock ’n’ roll energy. Led by singer-songwriter Cintia Lovo, the show promises dance energy combined with storytelling and connection. Beverages will be available for purchase from Blackback Pub. Music from 6 to 9 p.m. Free.
