Alan James Sparks, 1945-2026

Alan James Sparks passed away on September 30, 2026, at the age of 81.

Al graduated from People’s Academy High School and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army. He spent two years serving in Korea as a helicopter mechanic, then returned home to continue his service as a Military Policeman.

Al had a long and varied working life. Over the course of approximately 55 years, his career included working at Topnotch Resort and managing the Cummings Estate. He also worked in land planning and was well-known in the community from his years driving the school bus and trolley.

One of Al’s greatest joys was riding motorcycles, particularly his Harley-Davidson. During the summer months, he could be found riding several days a week. Wednesdays held a special place in his routine,  when he would ride with a close group of friends. Al was often the leader of the group because he knew every back road.

Al was involved with the Stowe Tennis Club, where he served on the board of directors. His many interests included poetry, reading and music. He especially enjoyed spending time in the British Virgin Islands with Kay, his brother, and close friends. Those who knew Al will also remember his wonderful sense of humor and his kind-hearted, jovial, and fun-loving personality.

Al is survived by his wife, Kay Sparks of Morrisville, Vermont; his daughter Lindsay Baumann, her husband Jeff, and their daughter Tansy of Waterbury Center; his daughter Chelsea Utt and her husband, JR, of Plant City, Florida; and his grandson, Micah Tolefree of Alpharetta, Georgia. He is also survived by his sister, Joanne Godfrey of Morrisville, and his brother, Jeff Sparks of Cambridge, Vermont, Jeff’s wife, Betsy Harper-Sparks, and their children, Josh Carlson and Emily  Bloom, as well as his brother-in-law, David Boyd of Wellesley, Massachusetts.

Al was predeceased in death by his daughter Lia Sparks, Micah’s mother; his sister Sally Boyd; and his brother-in-law, Richard Godfrey.

Al will be remembered for his devotion to his family and community, his curiosity, humor, and the countless miles of back roads shared with good friends and family.

A service honoring Al’s life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. at Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to honor Al consider supporting his daughter's scholarship fund, Lia’s Legacy Key, associated with Bold.org. Additional information can be found on Instagram at @liaslegacykey.
