Oct. 11: Fall household hazardous waste collection at Crossett Brook
October 3, 2025 | By Waterbury Roundabout
Fall cleanup is an opportunity to purge garages, sheds, basements and more of hard-to-dispose-of household products such as unwanted cleaners and pesticides, paint, batteries and more.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Mad River Resource Management Alliance will give residents in its member communities of Waterbury, Fayston, Moretown, Waitsfield and Warren a chance to dispose of household hazardous waste from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Crossett Brook Middle School in Duxbury.
In addition, any small businesses with hazardous waste to dispose of may participate, but they must preregister with their disposal inventory by Oct. 8.
Business waste will only be collected between 8 and 8:30 a.m., ahead of the residential hours. Businesses may register and determine the cost of their disposal with an email to alliance Manager John Malter at malterport@aol.com. Payment will be due at the time of the collection.
There is no charge for pesticides, architectural oil or latex paints, and primary batteries. In addition to those items, residents of alliance towns may bring up to 10 gallons of liquid or 10 pounds of solid material -- such as gasoline, oil, solvents, spray paints, fertilizer, etc. -- at no charge. For quantities larger than that, there is a $5 per unit disposal fee.
The collection will accept thermostats and mercury thermometers. Those dropping off thermostats will receive a coupon for a $5 rebate; mercury thermometers can be swapped for digital, one per family, Malter said.
The collection cannot accept fluorescent lamps or tubes; it also cannot accept material in 30- or 55-gallon drums. Also, no compressed gases, fire extinguishers, explosives, radioactive or infectious waste; no tires or electronic waste.
Individuals from communities that are not members of the alliance may drop off at the collection, Malter said. They will be charged a $30 fee and will not be given free disposal of 10 additional units of waste. Note: The town of Duxbury is not an alliance member.
