Keen-eyed observers on Stowe Street this week may have noticed a new addition to the facade at the Stimson & Graves Building, where a new brightly colored sign marks the entrance to the Waterbury Area Senior Center.

The name “The Center” is the main feature in a 3-D typeface, along with a deep blue Camel’s Hump silhouette against a bright blue sky as a background. Below is the message: “Serving Waterbury Area Seniors.”
According to Barbara Barra, chair of the Waterbury Area Senior Citizens Association’s Board of Directors, the new sign was designed, made and installed by Wood & Wood Signs from Waitsfield and paid for through a combination of donations and a grant.
The organization has not taken any steps to change its name. The new sign and its message are just meant to be more welcoming, Barra explained. “We actually do refer to it internally as ‘The Center.’ There has not been a sign on our building for many years, so hopefully this will help people find us!”
In operation since 1993, the senior center is a nonprofit organization serving older residents in Waterbury and the neighboring communities of Duxbury, Moretown, Middlesex and Bolton.
Barra said it strives to be a vibrant community hub “with a laser focus on addressing food insecurity and the health and welfare of seniors, many of whom are low-income.”
Barra said the center’s staff and volunteers want to be sure that seniors in the community are aware of the programs and events available from the facility, such as weekday lunches (no charge, donations welcome), game sessions, movies, speakers and presentations, health and educational programs, and the organization’s well-established Meals on Wheels delivery program.
Lunches are served every weekday at noon, although some arrive early to mingle beforehand Barra said. Menus are prepared and posted online at wasca.org. The first Wednesday each month features a full turkey dinner, which is very popular, she added.
Meals-on-Wheels assists older residents who are homebound or in need of meal assistance to live independently by preparing and delivering freshly made, nutritious meals, along with a friendly hello and informal wellness check by the delivery volunteers, Barra said. Anyone interested in signing up for Meals on Wheels deliveries can call 802-244-1234 or stop in for information to determine if they qualify, she said.
