Stark Mountain Foundation’s StorySki winter tradition continues on Saturday, Feb. 21, with the 8th annual event inviting young skiers and their families to Mad River Glen.

This year’s story is the picture book, “I Wish It Would Snow” by Sarah Dillard. From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., literary adventurers of all ages can ski through the woods at Mad River Glen from page to page, following the storybook’s pictures and tale.

Inspired by the original StoryWalk project from Montpelier’s Kellogg-Hubbard Library, the StorySki features a New England winter classic children’s book spread across a snowy trail, combining literacy with outdoor adventure to celebrate the season.

This year’s book choice is written and illustrated by former Stark Mountain Foundation board member Sarah Dillard and published by Simon & Schuster. It has a timeless wintry theme that follows one bunny’s journey from wishing for snow to being buried in a blizzard. After a wild ride through the flakes and a cozy night at home, Bunny wakes up ready to play – only to find his snowy wonderland disappearing.

Dillard, who lives near Mad River Glen, is the author and illustrator of several children’s books, including the Mouse Scout Series and the Extraordinary Warren books. She says that the inspiration for “I Wish it Would Snow!” came from her love of Stark Mountain. “It is exciting and gratifying to be able to share the book with readers and skiers on the very mountain that inspired it,” she said.

The StorySki project celebrates community, the outdoors, and the joy of reading – all values central to the mission of the Stark Mountain Foundation.

While this is a free event, a valid Mad River Glen lift ticket is required. More information and registration are online at starkmountain.org/news-events

The nonprofit Stark Mountain Foundation is based in Waitsfield with a mission to preserve and protect the environment and ecosystem of General Stark Mountain, home to Mad River Glen ski area.
