You probably know Vermont’s Long Trail, but are you familiar with the Green Mountain Club’s Short Trail?
That’s the half-mile trail at the club’s Waterbury Center headquarters along Vermont Route 100. It’s an easy walkable trail, especially for kids, and it gives club staff a spot to host hiking-related programs and events.
On upcoming Tuesdays and Wednesdays through September, the club’s Visitor Services Manager Emily Mosher will lead hikes on the Short Trail.
Anyone interested in learning about hiking in Vermont, the Long Trail and the Green Mountain Club is invited to attend. Mosher will cover those topics along with tips on how to have a successful hike.
These hikes are open to hikers of all ages, from beginner day-hikers to seasoned backpackers.
Hikes are scheduled for the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 10 a.m., and on the first and third Wednesdays at 2 p.m. Dates are: Wednesdays – July 16, Aug. 6, Aug. 20 and Sept. 3; Tuesdays – July 22, Aug. 12, Aug. 26. Allow about an hour with plenty of stops to explore.
These programs are free; no registration is required. More information is online here or contact the club at gmc@greenmountainclub.org or 802-244-7037.
July 19: Hiking with Kids Saturday program
This Saturday, July 19, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., the Green Mountain Club has a special free session for families with children between the ages of 5 and 10 years old, and kids are encouraged to attend.
Join the Green Mountain Club for an introduction to hiking with children and learn the basics of adventuring on the trails with your elmentary-school-aged youngsters.
In the first half, we'll help you discover the joys of sharing the trail with your children, how to find appropriate hiking trails with child-friendly “destinations,” what to wear, what to pack, with some easy-to-follow trail safety rules. Afterward, the group will head out on the Short Trail behind the Visitor Center for a hiking adventure.
Organizers ask attendees to register for this free event in advance.
