Vermont high school students currently in grades 9-11 are invited to apply by March 31 for immersive, career-focused summer learning experiences held on Vermont college campuses through the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont.
The summer residential programs run for one to two weeks, focused on specific topics of study, giving students an opportunity to explore a subject of interest through hands-on projects, expert instruction, and peer collaboration.
Program topics include Arts, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Global Issues & Youth Action, Health & Medicine, Mathematical Sciences, Technology & Design, and Weather & Climate Science.
A new program this summer is a partnership with the University of Vermont for the Health & Medicine Institute to Burlington for UVM professors and healthcare professionals to participate. Students will have a chance to learn about medical careers from nursing to respiratory therapy, biomedical research to dentistry, and surgery to psychology. Participants also can earn a Vermont Emergency First Responder certification, which will allow them to work on local ambulance crews.
Programs are designed to be accessible with sliding scale tuition, allowing students to attend for as little as $10.
The Governor’s Institutes of Vermont is a nonprofit organization that has served more than 14,000 Vermont students for 42 years. Donations help the programs to provide tuition assistance to participants.
