U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders is looking ahead to a special weekend home in mid-March to match wits with young Vermonters for his fourth annual Youth Chess Day.
Registration is open now for youngsters in grades 1-12 to sign up for the event set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, at Vermont State University in Randolph.
“I’m very pleased to announce that my office will once again host a Youth Chess Day. Over the last few years, more than 400 young Vermonters from across the state have come out to play one of the oldest games in human history,” Sanders said in the announcement.
The event is divided into two sessions. Learn to Play is an opportunity for students in grades 1-8 to learn how to play and hone their skills. More experienced players in all grades 1-12 can test their knowledge in a recreational tournament in the afternoon.
“I encourage ALL young Vermonters to sign up and take part — whether you have been playing for years or you’re just starting out,” Sanders said. “Students of all experience levels are welcome and everyone is invited to enjoy a free lunch together.”
