No serious injuries in three-car crash in wintry blast on first day of spring
March 21, 2026 | By Lisa ScagliottiWintry weather conditions on the first day of spring were a factor in a three-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on Vermont Route 100 in Waterbury, according to Vermont State Police.
No one was seriously hurt in the incident that happened near the northern intersection of Gregg Hill Road with Rt. 100 at about 1:40 p.m. It was snowing at the time and the road was both icy and slushy.
According to the police report by Trooper Mae Murdock, a Honda CRV driven by 22-year-old Carly Messick of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was headed north when Messick lost control on the slippery road and crossed into the southbound lane.
Messick’s Honda collided with a Jeep Wagoneer L driven by Amy Lacey, 50, of Bealeton, Virginia, police said.
A third vehicle, a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup driven by Christopher Tomaino,44, of East Setauket, New York, was traveling southbound behind Lacey. Tomaino’s vehicle then collided with Lacey’s Jeep, the police report explained.
In addition to state police, Waterbury Fire Department and Waterbury Ambulance Service responded. All three drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Messick and Tomaino were unhurt; Lacey had a wrist injury and was taken to Central Vermont Hospital, police said.
Both the Honda and the Jeep were totaled and towed by Bee There Towing. The pickup had minor damage, and the driver was able to drive it from the scene, police reported.
The crash scene took some time for the investigation and then to be cleared, resulting in significant travel delays, Murdock noted.
