A 60-year-old Duxbury man died in a one-vehicle crash on Monday in Fayston, according to Vermont State Police.
The collision happened just before noon on North Fayston Road. Police said they were called at 11:55 a.m.
They arrived at the scene to find that a 2023 GMC 3500 pickup truck had gone off the road and struck a tree. Police said the driver, Shawn Keating, 60, of Duxbury, was not wearing a seatbelt and had become entrapped in the vehicle.
Keating had been traveling west on North Fayston Road, police said. His truck crossed the center line, going off the south side of the roadway, before it struck a tree and stopped. The location of the crash was near the intersection with Abbey Road, according to the police report.
Multiple local emergency units responded in addition to the state police: Fire departments from Waitsfield/Fayston, Moretown and Waterbury; Mad River Valley Ambulance, Waterbury Ambulance Service and Barre Town EMS. A UVM medivac helicopter also responded and landed at the Mad River Park soccer fields. The pickup truck driver, however, succumbed to his injuries while crews were working to extricate him from the vehicle, and he was not transported, police said.
The weather conditions at the time of the crash were clear, and the road was dry. Keating’s truck was totaled, police said.
Trooper Ryan Riegler, who filed the crash report, said that this incident remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information that could assist investigators is asked to contact Riegler at the Berlin state police barracks at 802-229-9191.
