State police say death on Camel’s Hump is not suspicious

October 28, 2026 | By Lisa Scagliotti

Multiple first responders have been at work this afternoon on Camel’s Hump where a deceased individual was located on the Burrows Trail on the Huntington side of the mountain, according to Vermont State Police.

Members of several search and rescue teams, including Waterbury Backcountry Rescue, along with the state police, have been on the mountain since early this afternoon after the report of a deceased individual about 1.5 miles up the trail.

“There are no current indications that the death is suspicious,” state police spokesman Adam Silverman said in an email. “The trail is closed during recovery operations. Members of the public will see a large contingent of first responders in the area and should avoid the area to allow crews the necessary space to operate.”
More information will be released as the operation concludes.

Brian Lindner with Waterbury Backcountry Rescue confirmed that four members of the Waterbury team were participating in the operation.

This post will be updated as more information becomes available.
