Volunteers needed for 12 Waterbury board, commission openings
September 28, 2026 | By Lisa ScagliottiAs volunteers come and go, a total of 12 vacancies have opened up over the past several months on Waterbury’s volunteer boards and commissions, and on two of the town’s elected commissions.
In all cases, the Waterbury Select Board would appoint new members to fill the openings.
For the volunteer positions, new members would serve until the end of the term they were stepping in to fill. In the case of the elected positions, appointments would be made through the next Town Meeting Day election, which will be on March 2.
The openings on elected commissions are one seat each on the Library Commission and the Cemetery Commission. Commissioner Margaret Moreland stepped down from the library position in June, and Commissioner Barbara Walton resigned more recently from the cemetery position.
If there are interested candidates, the Select Board could make appointments to those seats until March, with newcomers getting to serve for just over four months.
Seats on the library and cemetery commissions have five-year terms, and both Moreland and Walton were in the final year of their terms. That means that those positions will be on the March Town Meeting Day ballot to elect commissioners to new five-year terms.
Newly appointed commissioners could decide to run for election. The offices would also be open to any other candidates interested in running on the March ballot.
The Library Commission meets monthly on the second Monday of the month. Anna Black is the commission chair. Member information, meeting agendas, and minutes are on and linked to the commission’s page on the town website here.

The elected commissions typically review candidates when there is a vacancy to fill in between elections, and they make a recommendation to the Select Board. The board is not required to follow the recommendation, however.
10 volunteer openings
Five of the town’s volunteer boards, committees and commissions currently have openings for new members. Citizens serving in these roles bring their interest and experience to discussions and projects. The Select Board relies on the work of these advisory groups on a wide variety of topics that are part of local government.
Terms usually begin on May 1 and run for two to four years. In some cases, members step down before their term ends.
Current openings are:
Conservation Commission: three open seats with terms ending in April 2029
Development Review Board: one open seat until April 2027
Housing Task Force: one seat with a term ending in April 2028; two seats ending in April 2029
Natural Disaster Preparedness Committee: one seat with a term ending in April 2029
Recreation Committee: two seats with terms ending in April 2027
Tree Board: one seat with a term ending in April 2027
