LETTER: Safe schools for all students

April 16, 2023

Dear members of the HUUSD Community:

On Wednesday, April 19, the Harwood Unified Union School District School Board will vote on whether to approve the Restraint and Seclusion Policy, which has been under revision.

The subcommittee’s efforts are commendable and they were able to include language in the policy to ban dangerous prone and supine restraints, but the policy continues to permit seclusion, a harmful practice with permanent mental health trauma.

Please consider joining myself and others by attending the board meeting in person on April 19 at the HUHS library beginning at 6 p.m. Help be an upstander and tell the board to send the policy back to the subcommittee for revision.

The policy must include a ban on seclusion to protect all students. Our group will quietly stand and hold a sign with the following statement:

Vote No

Our Policy must INCLUDE

Our Schools DO NOT SECLUDE

Respectfully,

Amy Coach Dietz
