The Green Mountain Morgans girls softball team is prepping to head to Staten Island, New York, on Thursday for the Eastern Regional Little League 10U Softball Championship.
The team won the Vermont state championship in the 8-10-year-old division on July 11 and next heads to Staten Island to represent Vermont in the regional tournament.
In the short time since, the team has been fundraising and they are close to their goal of $16,500, according to Kristin Brynga, one of three coaches for the team. The trip costs are estimated at $1,500 per player. The latest tally was right around $16,000. “We’re almost there,” she said.
Since their win, the 11 players and their coaches have spent time at Norwich University in Northfield practicing there on the school’s turf field. “We don't play on turf fields in Vermont, so this will be an adjustment,” Brynga pointed out in a social media post. “Pitching, sliding and fielding ground balls are a little bit different on the turf!”
The all-star Central Vermont team has players from nine schools around the region and five area Little League Clubs. It formed three years ago as a joint effort of Paine Mountain (Northfield), Clyde Whittemore (Waterbury), Central Vermont, Barre, and Mad River Little Leagues. Coaches are Brynga of Waterbury, head coach Katie Green from Paine Mountain, and Jamie Winters from Mad River.
The tournament in New York begins on Friday with a team parade and it runs through July 30. Once game times are assigned, a schedule will be posted online. Livestreams of games will also be available.
