In what’s become a twice-yearly gathering of fast dogs – or dogs who at least think they are fast – the Green Mountain Dog Club hosts its fall FastCAT Run at Dac Rowe Park in Waterbury next weekend, Oct. 4-5.
Registration is still open with some spots still available, according to Andrea McMahan, a lead local organizer and club member.
First held in 2021, the family-friendly events draw about 100 dogs of all breeds, sizes, ages, and abilities to try out an American Kennel Club organized canine sport.
Despite the name, the event truly is only for dogs. CAT is short for “Coursing Aptitude Test,” which is similar to the American Kennel Club’s timed races that rank dogs in a national database.
“Think of it as a 100-yard dash for dogs,” the event announcement suggests. “From couch potatoes to conditioned athletes, canine competitors have a chance to stretch out and run their fastest in a safe space, chasing a lure that is fairly accurately described as a trash bag on a string, while their humans clap and cheer them on.”
The non-sanctioned event is mainly for fun, socialization and a little exercise. The FastCAT is open to most dogs, regardless of breed or mix. Some requirements: They need to be at least 6 months old, and females in season are not allowed.
Advance registration is required with a fee of $15 per run for up to three runs per dog. Young dogs ages 6-12 months may enter the “puppy run” that’s just 50 yards long; that will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday. All dogs must be on leash until it’s their time to enter the fenced-in course.
Runs will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4-5, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The course will be set up near the Winooski Street entrance to Dac Rowe Park, making that entrance most convenient. Green Mountain Dog Club members will be on hand to assist the competitors and their humans. Registration closes at midnight on Oct. 2, or when the signup is full, whichever comes first. Spectators are welcome and encouraged.
More information and registration are online on the Green Mountain Dog Club website. Proceeds support the nonprofit Green Mountain Dog Club.
