Church organizes ‘Neighborhood Yard Sale’ fundraiser, Aug.14-15

Wesley United Methodist Church is organizing a new approach to its summer fundraiser – a Neighborhood Yard Sale this coming Friday-Saturday, Aug. 14-15. 

Wesley United Methodist Church is at 56 S. Main St. in Waterbury

The sale will be set up on the church grounds and inside the church’s lower level at the corner of 56 South Main and Foundry streets in Waterbury. Sale hours will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

Community members have been invited to participate in the sale by signing up to bring their items to sell at a six-foot-long table space for $25. The table fees support the church, and sellers keep the proceeds from the items they sell, explained Bev Young, one of the sale’s organizers. 

“We are thankful for them joining our sale,” Young said. 

Inside the church, volunteers are planning a bake sale. In addition to baked goods like brownies, rolls and pies, it will include homemade baked beans, soups and more. Tickets for a 50/50 raffle will also be sold at the sale for $1 each. Another raffle will have a prize drawing for a fall-themed gift basket with a door wreath, a homemade table runner created by Julie Green, and other items. The drawings will be at the sale on Saturday at 2 p.m. Winners need not be present. 

Young said the sale organizers are trying a different approach this year, rather than asking for donations and organizing volunteers to manage a large sale. Getting individual sellers together with their items may add to the variety and appeal of the sale and reduce the burden on a small number of church volunteers. “If we are successful, we will try to make it an annual event,” she said.
