Prepare to laugh, wonder, and question reality when Comedy Illusionist Ben Pratt takes the stage at Phantom Theater’s Edgcomb Barn in Warren for three performances on Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 22-23
Combining illusion, stand-up comedy, and audience participation, Pratt’s performances offer live entertainment that genuinely appeals to all ages. Saturday's performances are designed for families and ages 8 and up; Sunday's evening show offers a more grown-up comedy experience. Following the Saturday 3 p.m. matinee, children are invited to a one-hour magic workshop where Pratt will introduce young audience members to the art of illusion to inspire the next generation of magicians.
Pratt’s fascination with magic began at age 5, watching David Copperfield perform the legendary “Death Saw” illusion on television.
“I remember thinking, ‘If that's magic, I want to do that,’” Pratt recalls.
That moment sparked a lifelong passion. From beginner magic kits to specialty magic shops in Boston, his childhood curiosity quickly became a serious pursuit. He began performing as a teenager at local events and birthday parties before developing the distinctive stage show that has earned him audiences throughout New England.
Although largely self-taught, Pratt credits his mentor, long-time friend, and fellow magician David Garrity with helping shape his career. “Watching David perform made me realize stage illusion was where I belonged,” he said.
Pratt has become well-known within the magic community for his original rope illusions, while his background in stand-up comedy gives his performances a style all their own. “My show feels like a stand-up comedy show that happens to have a lot of magic in it,” Pratt explained. “The audience becomes part of the experience.”
That audience interaction, paired with his quick wit and carefully crafted illusions, makes every performance unique. Pratt’s humor works on multiple levels, giving adults plenty to laugh about while remaining playful enough for younger audience members. He also continually develops new material, often spending months—or even an entire year—perfecting a single illusion before unveiling it onstage.
“Magic creates mystery,” he said. “My job is to leave people wondering how what they just saw could possibly be real.”
That passion is evident in Pratt’s eagerness to teach, such as with the children’s workshop he will include on Saturday. He said he aims to introduce children to both the mechanics and the wonder of magic.
“I'll teach a few tricks and the fundamentals about what magic really is, but more importantly, I want kids to experience the mystery. Magic isn’t just about knowing how something works—it’s about creating a sense of wonder.”
