Lamoille County Players hold auditions for ‘A 1940s Radio Christmas Carol’

Looking ahead to the holiday season, the Lamoille County Players will hold auditions this weekend for “A 1940s Radio Christmas Carol” at the Hyde Park Opera House.

The show is planned to run for two weekends, December 4-6 and 11-13. “A 1940s Radio Christmas Carol” takes place in 1943, when victory was not assured in World War II. The Feddington Players gather on Christmas Eve at the rundown radio studio of WOV in Newark, New Jersey, to present their version of the Charles Dickens classic, “A Christmas Carol,” for a nationwide audience.

With humor, sentiment and some unintended improvisation, the players get through the performance with aplomb. This is a fast-moving comedy mixing the familiarity of “A Christmas Carol” and the magic of live broadcasting. The show’s music is a combination of standards and original songs, arranged and written in 1940s style.

Auditions on Saturday, Sept. 12, begin at 4 p.m.; on Sunday they start at 1 p.m.

The play’s cast calls for characters ranging in age from 18 to 70-ish, and they perform primarily as an ensemble. Also needed is a live Foley sound effects crew to provide the sound effects used in the story’s live radio show. All parts involve singing, and several characters will need strong singing voices for their parts. Playing an instrument is a bonus, but not required for casting.
