The Waterbury Public Library’s March highlights of free programming for adult programs include some regular favorites and some seasonal special events.

Remember to check the Waterbury Public Library website for details on all programs for all ages.

Below are date-specific programs listed first, with recurring programs following.

March 11: Silent Reading Party

Hosted by the library and Bridgeside Books, this month’s Silent Reading Party will be held at the Old Stagecoach Inn at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11. Bring a book and settle in for an hour of silent reading. At the end of the reading time, attendees may share a bit about their books. No previous experience necessary. New readers are encouraged to attend.

Note: The No Pressure Book Group will not be meeting in March and will resume in April.

March 13: Fiber Arts

The Fiber Arts group meets monthly on the second Friday of the month from noon to 2 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a snack or lunch along with your current project.  This is a chance for fiber artists to meet up and work in a social atmosphere. Those working on all varieties of fiber arts are welcome, from knitting and crocheting to needle felting and weaving.

Note: The separate Hand Stitchers sewing group is not meeting in March.

March 14: Community Seed Swap

Build community resilience and share the seed wealth on Saturday, March 14, at the Community Seed Swap hosted by Organic Farmers Sarah Vecci and Brenda Hedges from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Vecci has been a commercial vegetable grower, seed farmer, and currently homesteads in

Waterbury Center, where she sells plant starts at the end of her driveway each spring.

Hedges has been an organic farm inspector and a commercial seedling starter, and she also homesteads in Waterbury Center. Both are passionate about ensuring agricultural community resilience.

Come share seeds and meet other gardeners. Bring your extra packets of veggie, herb and flower seeds to share, and go home with new ones. Swapping is not necessary. You can just attend and take home seeds.

Drop in anytime from 10-1. Envelopes will be available to pack up from bulk, as well as plenty of individual packets. The organizers ask that you bring no seeds older than five years unless you have germ tested them or successfully planted them within the last year.

Kids are welcome! There will be a seed art activity for them while adults browse for free seeds.

March 21: Writers’ Wertfrei writing group meets on the third Saturday of the month at 10 a.m.  Dorinne Dorfman will facilitate. New members are welcome. Bring your current writing project to share, seek feedback, etc.

‘transient i’ exhibit and March 31 artist reception

Photographs by Fletcher Joestar

The library presents local Puerto Rican artist, printmaker and photographer Fletcher Joestar in the café and upstairs from March through April. Now living in Stowe, Joestar’s years of touring in the music industry have given them the unique opportunity to photograph life on the road, chronicling a behind-the-scenes perspective from getting to wake up somewhere new each day. Such transience is a recurring theme for Joestar who who shoots and home-processes 35mm film, exploring with analog photography to turn fleeting moments into tangible objects of admiration and nostalgia. The show “transient i” is up on exhibit through April. An artist reception will be held on March 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with Joestar speaking at 6:30 p.m. and taking questions. Refreshments will be served.

Tuesdays: Watercolor classes have resumed

Instructor Pauline Nolte has returned from travels in Southeast Asia and has resumed teaching the library’s Watercolor Class in the Steele Community Room weekly on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through April. March 31 will have a special session for those new to watercolor held inside the library, not the Steele Room.

Nolte provides both instruction and opportunity for independent work. Whether you are new to watercolor or have been painting for a while, this class suits both beginners and artists alike. Classes are free and supplies are provided for beginners. Attendance is limited to 12 participants. To register, email judi@waterburypubliclibrary.com.

Yoga classes & exercise for 60+

If movement appeals to you, choose between Chair Yoga on Zoom or Gentle Yoga in person on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, respectively. An Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program for ages 60+ continues on Fridays.

Chair Yoga isn’t necessarily gentle. It uses the chair for support and balance. The group meets at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays with instructor Diana Whitney. Zoom link and videos are online here.

Gentle Yoga is for all levels. It meets on Saturdays through April in the Steele Room from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. with instructor Erica Antell.

A separate Friday exercise program continues by the Arthritis Foundation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Steele Room. This program is for anyone looking for an easy-on-the-joints workout.  This low-impact, evidence-based Central Vermont Council on Aging program helps keep muscles strong and joints flexible. It will continue through May.
