Neighborhood parties can get a boost from Montpelier grant program

Montpelier’s community development nonprofit, Montpelier Alive, announced a grant program this week to help Washington County residents throw neighborhood parties. 

Small grants of $200-$500 are being offered as a community-building effort through the organization’s Capital Connection program. 

Funding is limited and the application deadline is Aug. 3. Grants will be awarded to individuals, neighborhood groups, informal community organizers, or community entities planning a neighborhood gathering or similar community event in Washington County.

Examples of eligible events include block parties, neighborhood potlucks, welcome gatherings, community cookouts, porch gatherings, or other informal events designed to bring neighbors together. 

Events should be open and welcoming to community members in the intended area and should focus on strengthening connection, belonging, and community resilience, according to the announcement.

“We know that one of the most important parts of feeling at home in a community is knowing your neighbors,” said Katie Trautz, executive director of Montpelier Alive. “Through Capital Connection, we are excited to support small, welcoming gatherings that help residents build relationships and feel more connected to the places they live.”

The grant awards will prioritize events that generate connections among neighbors, create welcoming opportunities for new residents, reduce isolation, strengthen neighborhood networks, demonstrate collaboration, or serve an area or population that may benefit from additional community-building support, the announcement says.

Applicants must describe their event, note what the funds will be used for, why the support is needed, and how the event will benefit the neighborhood or community. 

Grant funds may be used for food and non-alcoholic refreshments, supplies, basic decorations, printing or outreach materials, tables, chairs, tents, family-friendly activities, or modest entertainment costs. Grant funds may not be used for alcohol, political fundraising or campaign activity, or expenses incurred before the grant approval unless specifically authorized.

The online application form is now open with a submission deadline of 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 3. The form requires use of a Google account. For assistance in submitting an application, email festivals@montpelieralive.org.
