Waterbury Fire Department put in a full day working a fire along Route 100 in Waterbury on Saturday, but the effort was all a learning exercise.
The Waterbury crew was joined by members of neighboring fire departments from Waitsfield, Stowe and Cambridge for a controlled burn training at the vacant former office building at IVY Computer.
Battalion Chief Sally Dillon said about 45 firefighters participated, including a class from Stowe. “For many from that class, it was their introduction to live fire. They all did great and had a very positive experience,” Dillon shared.
Waterbury Ambulance personnel attended to assist with monitoring participants as they went through the various exercises in full gear in conditions that involved heavy smoke. Waterbury Fire Department auxiliary members provided food and drinks.
Dillon extended particular thanks to Battalion Chief Kyle Guyette, who coordinated the day’s event.
