Obituary: Ruth Stewart Sugg

September 20, 2025Ruth Stewart Sugg (Tunie), 77, passed away on Monday night, September 15, 2025, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin after a long battle with dementia and Alzheimer's.
Born on May 24, 1948, in Burlington, she was the daughter of the late Bernard G. and Ruth E. (Woodard) Stewart. She married James A. Sugg on May 24, 1983, in Port Sanilac, Michigan. He predeceased her on July 1, 2007.
Ruth graduated from Waterbury High School in 1966. After high school, she attended and graduated from the Shelden Academy of Beauty in Burlington. She worked for several years as a hairdresser in Barre, Montpelier and Stowe. She then moved to Michigan with her husband Jim and later worked for the Dotts Manufacturing Company. In 2008, she returned to Waterbury.
Ruth enjoyed reading and doing various crafting projects, and she also enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by her sisters, Susan Chalmers and Diane “Dinnie” Stewart, both of Waterbury; her brother Bernard “BG” Stewart of Bennington; nieces, nephews, and extended family.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Judy Ather, Artalee “Pete” Martin, and Sharon MacMahan, and two nephews, Earl “Butch” Martin and William Ather.
A graveside service to celebrate Ruth’s life will be held on Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. at the Maple Street Cemetery in Waterbury Center. For those who wish to make memorial gifts in Ruth’s memory, please visit the Alzheimer’s Foundation at alz.org.
