Stowe Free Library invites all to film screening, discussion group

The Friends of Stowe Free Library invite Waterbury-area community members to two upcoming free programs at the library.

See details below for a screening of the feature film “The Farm Boy” by Waterbury farmer, filmmaker, actor and author George Woodard, and a community discussion about U.S. foreign policy.

Aug. 13: ‘The Farm Boy’ film screening

Set in 1944, The Farm Boy is a black-and-white feature film with a love story and adventure, loosely based on the real-life story of Director George Woodard’s parents. It is a story about trust, integrity, and standing behind your word. A story of a time when war took young men away from their homes and returned them as heroes. “The Farm Boy” will stir emotions and take the viewer on a riveting adventure into the past. This critically acclaimed film was mostly shot on Woodard's farm in Waterbury.  7 p.m.

Aug. 19: Beyond Our Own Backyard

Interested in foreign affairs? Ready to move beyond the headlines? “Beyond Our Own Backyard” invites community members to the library for engaging conversations about recent foreign policy actions by the United States. Pulling from nonpartisan foreign policy think tank panels, thought-provoking readings, and expert presentations, the group examines not just current actions but the historic relationships and cultural contexts that drive them, and how they affect our daily lives. 

The topic for this session is the renewed tension in U.S.-Cuban relations. U.S. leaders say we are on the precipice of increased aggressiveness toward Cuba. Are we? To stimulate the discussion, the group will review earlier attempts at U.S. intervention, expert analyses of the U.S.-Cuba relationship, and current commentary from U.S. leaders. The group meets at 5 p.m.
