Teachers from Brookside Primary School and Crossett Brook Middle School have been nominated for the University of Vermont’s annual Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards.
Special education teacher Melanie Zima at Crossett Brook and Camille Anderson at Brookside were chosen as the two nominees from the Harwood Unified Union School District, Superintendent Mike Lichleiter announced this week.
“The heart of our work is in showing up each day, being present for our students, and making a difference in ways we may not always see right away. Melanie and Camille embody this truth,” Leichliter said in announcing the honors. “Their daily commitment reminds us that the strength of our schools lies in the relationships we build and the care we extend to every child. They exemplify the very best of our district and the teaching profession, and we celebrate them as representatives of the many outstanding educators across all HUUSD schools.”
Each year, the UVM College of Education and Social Services and the Vermont Agency of Education honor the accomplishments of licensed Vermont educators. Each supervisory union and school district in the state may nominate two teachers who exemplify the ideals of the teaching profession.
The district’s announcement that Leichliter shared describes Zima as “a special educator whose energy, positivity, and adaptability make an incredible impact on the lives of her students.” It praises her as a leader and strong collaborator.
“She works compassionately with families to ensure every child feels supported and valued.”
In her work, Zima adapts with a focus on making her students feel a sense of belonging, the district notes. An example is her skill at creating individualized programs that use Legos, toy cars, and Minecraft as well as helping students connect with peers through social groups and with the community through work-based learning.

“Her classroom is filled with energy and positivity,” the announcement notes.
At Brookside, Anderson is a grade 3-4 teacher “whose unwavering commitment to student growth and success is evident in all she does,” the announcement said.
“She continually seeks out new strategies, reflects on their effectiveness, and adapts her practice to meet the diverse needs of learners.”
Collaboration with students, colleagues and families is also a top priority for Anderson. “By working closely with her team, Camille ensures that every child receives the support, challenge, and encouragement needed to thrive,” it continues. “Beyond her skill and dedication, Camille brings warmth, creativity, and joy to the classroom. Students know they are valued, and families trust that their children are in capable, compassionate hands.”
Zima and Anderson will be recognized at the 45th annual Outstanding Educator Awards ceremony to be held on Nov. 6 at UVM.
