What’s become an annual springtime musical debut event for many young Vermont musicians  -- including Harwood school district students -- will take place soon after April school break.

Music-COMP's OPUS 38 Concert is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, at the Elley Long Music Center on the Saint Michael’s College campus in Colchester.

The concert program will feature 34 premieres by 36 composers in grades 3-12, according to Executive Director Stefanie Weigand.

“There will be plenty of new music to treat your ears with Vermont's own professional contemporary classical chamber ensemble, TURNmusic, performing 25 new works in concert as well as nine new electronic works being played on site throughout the evening!” Weigand said.

Students from the Harwood Unified Union School District include Harwood Union High School students Julia Wulff and Dylan Mauro and Crossett Brook Middle School students Audrey Conyers, Ari Weigand, Grayson Eley, Jasper LaRocca, and Robin Weigand.

They have been working one-on-one with composer/mentors through Music-COMP, a nonprofit based in Waterbury, since January to compose and finalize their individual pieces. Written for a combination of strings, winds, and piano, each new work highlights student creativity and shows the personal flair of these young musicians, Weigand explains.

The process for the student composers as they prepare for the premiere of their new music includes rehearsals with their musicians and workshops with special guest presenters. They also take part in interviews for a documentary compiled by Lake Champlain Access Television

The Opus 38 concert is performed free to the public. Find more information online at: music-comp.org/opus-38
