Paving is planned on two sections of road in Duxbury on Thursday and Friday this week, according to an announcement on Wednesday from town officials.

Selectboard Chair Richard Charland said a one-inch layer of asphalt will be put down on the section of Main Street starting at the former elementary school (now River Branch Community School) heading south toward Vermont Route 100. The other section is on River Road west of the stretch that was paved last year.  The goal is to get those heavily traveled roads in better shape before winter.

β€œThe objective is to provide both a smoother surface and to prevent damage to town plow equipment from the potholes and broken up pavement,” the town announcement explains.

Charland said the mild weather forecast for the end of this week will be ideal for the work which should start in the mornings. Motorists may want to avoid the areas while the work is underway. Traffic will be maintained, but it may be slowed for the projects.

Another top layer of pavement will be added to these sections in the spring, Charland said.

Local road projects are winding down for the season.

Paving was completed last week on Winooski Street near the bridge where repairs were done to the section of roadway that was damaged in the July flood. The speed table also was added to Little River Road. Public Works Director Bill Woodruff said the latter needs some lines and striping which will be done as soon as possible with the right weather conditions.

The main municipal project still under way is the water line replacement on lower Blush Hill between the reservoir at the end of Blackberry Lane through the Ashford Lane-Acorn and Kennedy drives neighborhood. Residents there will see crews working this week. Those streets will be paved in 2024.
