Volunteers once again are organizing a food drive on Election Day to help stock the shelves at the Waterbury Common Market ahead of the holiday season.
“Supplies at the [market] are scarce, which is unwelcome news at a time of year when demand tends to go up,” said drive organizer Mary Miller.
Common Market Director Sara Whitehair said the market has been busy with a recent increase in traffic as people are starting to face fuel bills and other costs connected with wintertime.
To help replenish market shelves, Miller and a team of volunteers on Election Day will run a food drive at the polls at Brookside Primary School. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, voters at the school casting their ballots, as well as any community member who may have already voted, are encouraged to support the drive by dropping off canned goods, non-perishable food or monetary donations from 7 a.m. until the polls close at 7 p.m.
General Election ballots have been mailed to all voters. In Washington County there is an additional ballot that was not automatically mailed with two questions about the Central Vermont Career Center expansion project. Voters who have not cast that ballot early, can vote on that issue in person on Election Day. Voters also may return their marked General Election ballots to the polls.
Anyone wishing to support the Waterbury Common Market at this time of year separate from donating at the polls on Nov. 3 can use special collection bins at the Waterbury Village Market and Shaw’s for food donations. Monetary gifts can be made online on the market website or mailed to Waterbury Common Market, 57 S. Main Street, Waterbury, VT 05676. Monetary donations allow the market staff to buy food directly from the Vermont Food Bank and other sources.
Located at 57 S. Main Street, the Waterbury Common Market is a nonprofit resource for food and grocery items free of charge to community members serving Waterbury, Duxbury, Bolton, Middlesex, Moretown and Stowe. It is open Monday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon; Wednesdays, 3-6 p.m.
