A former psychotherapist from Moretown has received a deferred sentence in Washington County Superior Court for a felony Medicaid fraud conviction.

Amy L. Siegel (also known as Amy S. Lang), 49, was sentenced on Thursday by Judge Michael Kainen on charges resulting from Siegel admitting to falsely billing the state for over $4,000 of treatment for services that were not provided.

The case was part of a joint investigation by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud and Residential Abuse Unit and the Department of Vermont Health Access Special Investigations Unit.

After a contested sentencing, Judge Kainen deferred sentencing for five years, during which time Siegel must abide by terms of probation and not engage in any psychotherapy practice. Siegel must also pay $4,551.62 in restitution for 48 fraudulent claims submitted in association with a patient’s treatment that she did not provide, according to the Attorney General’s office. If Siegel complies with these terms, the court could vacate her conviction.

In reporting on this case, the Attorney General’s office notes that anyone who suspects Medicaid fraud should contact the Medicaid Fraud and Residential Abuse Unit via the Attorney General’s website.

For fiscal year 2027, the Medicaid Fraud and Residential Abuse Unit receives 75% of its funding from a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant of $1,621,775; the remainder is from the state of Vermont, totaling $540,425 for FY27.
