Road Work: June 9-13
June 10, 2025 | By Lisa Scagliotti June 12: This post was updated with details about a project on Howard Avenue planned for June 12-13.
Weekly Road Work reports are assembled with information from the Vermont Agency of Transportation on projects in the region, the Waterbury Public Works Department and other local highway departments for projects in Waterbury and other neighboring communities as necessary.
Motorists are reminded to drive with caution through work zones and to follow posted speed limits. Speeding fines are doubled in work areas.

Kneeland Flats Road: Paving is scheduled for Monday-Tuesday, June 9-10, on Kneeland Flats Road, where old asphalt was milled in mid-May. Work is weather-dependent and could be delayed by rain, Public Works Director Bill Woodruff said. The road will remain open, but drivers should expect delays and may want to take an alternate route.

Lincoln Street | Park & Ride: Starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, work will begin on the sewer bypass for the Stowe Street Bridge 36 project. A sewer line on the bridge will be removed in preparation for the bridge replacement work that begins next week. Traffic on Lincoln Street will be slowed with two lanes open, but narrowed, to allow for the work. Drivers on Lincoln Street can expect the travel lanes to be shifted to accommodate this activity.
Starting on Monday, June 9, the Park & Ride parking lot on Lincoln Street will be temporarily closed for the duration of the bridge replacement project. The state of Vermont has designated the vacant lot in the State Office Complex downtown at the intersection of Randall Street and Park Row as the substitute lot for commuters and for the public transit buses that use the Lincoln Street Park & Ride. (This is the site of the former Stanley and Wasson Halls at the state complex.)
Howard Avenue: On Thursday and Friday, June 12-13, Howard Avenue will be CLOSED to through traffic. A crew from contractor J.A. McDonald returns to complete the water line repair on Thursday. On Friday, paving will be done.
Interstate 89: Montpelier-Waterbury southbound
Surveying work continues this week, Monday-Friday, June 9-13, in the work zone on I-89 southbound between mile markers 64.2 and 52.6. Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., motorists can expect major delays during peak hours.
The surveying is one of the final steps before work commences on this two-year, 10.5-mile resurfacing project that will involve rebuilding both travel lanes. The project is anticipated to last through both this construction season and next summer, with completion targeted by Aug. 15, 2026, according to the Vermont Agency of Transportation.

Final steps are underway to complete the bridge replacement project on U.S. 2 over Interstate 89 in Richmond. State transportation officials do not anticipate any impacts to travel on I-89 this week associated with this project.
Guardrail installation on Rt. 2 has been completed. Remaining work includes paving on U.S. Rt. 2, spreading topsoil and grass seed on disrupted areas along the roadway, and continued cleanup.
This week, Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., paving at driveways in the project area will be done as well as pavement markings, weather permitting. Traffic control will be present in the project zone, allowing for alternating one-way traffic with minimal interruptions.

FAYSTON
Fayston town officials announced on Monday that work to complete the stabilization and stone lining of Dunbar Hill Road is scheduled to take place from June 10 through June 25. The project is necessary to complete repairs from damage caused by flooding in July 2024. “It is part of ongoing efforts to improve road resilience and protect infrastructure in the event of future storms,” the announcement said.
During the project, residents can expect increased truck traffic hauling stone along North Fayston Road to Dunbar Hill Road, heavy equipment operating on Dunbar Hill Road, and possible delays or disruptions.
Road closures are not anticipated; however, should a closure be necessary, town officials will notify residents immediately, they said.
The work is being done by Northfield contractor Hallstrom Excavating.
