Stepped-up police patrols, checkpoints will promote safe holiday driving

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department wants motorists to know that they along with other state and local law enforcement agencies will be increasing their patrols and checkpoints over the holidays to promote sober driving.
The extra police presence on the roads are aimed at making travel safe on behalf of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Vermont State Highway Safety Office Governor’s Highway “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Campaign.
Starting on Friday, Dec. 26, through New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, law enforcement around the state will be will be stepping up enforcement efforts by working extra hours conducting Saturation Patrols and Sobriety Checkpoints.
The sheriff’s department asks drivers to be mindful of safety during this time, offering these tips:
If you are going to be drinking or under the influence of drugs, DO NOT DRIVE. Plan for a safe way home.
If you know someone has been drinking or using an impairing drug, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Take their keys and help them arrange a safe ride home.
If you’re hosting a party where alcohol or other substances will be used, it is your job to make sure all guests leave with a sober driver. Plan ahead for sleeping arrangements or carpooling home with a sober driver.
As of Dec. 22, Vermont has had 54 fatal crashes this year, resulting in 57 highway deaths. The impairment statistics in these crashes was: 22 DUI drug, nine DUI alcohol and drug, and two DUI alcohol only. Of these crashes, eight also involved cannabis use.
The sheriff’s department urges Vermonters to be safe on the roads: “We wish all our friends and neighbors a safe, fun, and festive holiday season. Be safe out there.”
