Harwood teams log wins in season-opening games

Editor’s Note: Winter high school sports season has begun and Waterbury Roundabout will be following Harwood Union High School varsity teams this season with coverage by correspondent Lauren Read as well as sharing coverage by the Times Argus. Here’s a look at some game results from last week. 

BOYS ICE HOCKEY

Harwood 6, South Burlington 2: The Harwood boys ice hockey team opened the season with a win over South Burlington at home on Saturday. 

Griffin Nelson and Eli Herrington each had two goals and an assist to lead the Highlanders, who move to 1-0. Milo Lavit and Cooper Browe each chipped in with a goal. 

Andrew Achilles stopped 15 shots in goal to earn the win. 

Harwood will travel to take on Saint Johnsbury at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

GIRLS ICE HOCKEY

Harwood 11, Brattleboro 3: Harwood used an offensive outburst to pull away for a win over Brattleboro on Saturday night in high school girls hockey. 

Bridan Merrill scored four goals for the Highlanders, while Alex Isham had a hat trick. Jocelyn Brauer tallied twice and Raine Diller and Macy Mauntler each added a goal. 

Camille Edgcomb earned the shutout in goal for Harwood, who are now 1-0. 

The Highlanders will take on the Chittenden Charge on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Cairns Arena in South Burlington. Chittenden Charge is a new cooperative high school girls hockey team formed with players from Champlain Valley Union, South Burlington and Mount Mansfield Union high schools. 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Harwood 44, Mount Abraham 29: Two Harwood players hit double digits and Harwood beat Mount Abraham on Friday night to open the season with a win at home. 

Maddie Ryley paced the Highlanders with 18 points, while Roanha Chalmers added 17 points and five rebounds. 

Harwood (1-0) will take on Lamoille on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Lamoille. 

WRESTLING

The Harwood wrestling team traveled to Saint Johnsbury on Saturday to open the season at the Sandy Murray Memorial Tournament. The Highlanders came in third overall. 

Three Harwood wrestlers came in first place. Duncan Klink won the 120-pound division, Nicky Service was first in the 157-pound division, and Ethan Lacroix took the top spot in the 165-pound category. 

Nate Sackett was second in the 132-pound division, and Payton Tomasi-Diuglass was third in the 113-pound category.
