HU boys basketball, hockey log wins; Chittenden Charge stops girls hockey

Here’s a recap from Harwood Union High School varsity sports from last week. 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Harwood 77, Vergennes 54: The Harwood Boys Basketball team beat Vergennes on Saturday night to capture the win and move to 2-0. 

Steele Nelson had 25 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double in the win for the Highlanders. Alex Sands finished with 24 points, and Braedon Bellows chipped in with 13 points for Harwood. 

The Highlanders also got a win on Wednesday, beating Middlebury in overtime. Nelson had 24 points and 19 rebounds in that win. 

Harwood (2-0) will host Mount Abraham at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS ICE HOCKEY

Chittenden Charge 7, Harwood 2: The Harwood Girls Hockey team fell to the Chittenden Charge on Saturday.

Paige Pratt and Alex Isham each scored for the Highlanders, who move to 1-1 with the loss. Keeper Camille Edgcomb had a busy game, turning aside 30 shots for Harwood.

Chittenden Charge is a new cooperative high school girls hockey team with players from Champlain Valley Union, South Burlington and Mount Mansfield Union high schools in Chittenden County.

Harwood (1-1) will travel to play Hartford on Dec. 27 at 2 p.m.

BOYS ICE HOCKEY

Harwood 12, Saint Johnsbury 3: Eli Herrington had a hat trick and two assists for Harwood, and the Highlanders beat Saint Johnsbury in boys hockey on Wednesday. 

Griffin Nelson had a goal and five assists in the game; Sam Pashby tallied twice for the Highlanders. 

Cooper Browe, Jack Sherman, Lucas Austin, Taj Fairchild, Owen Farr, and Luke Lacroix each scored for Harwood. 

Goalie Andrew Achilles made 18 saves in goal for the Highlanders, who move to 2-0.

Harwood was to play Stowe tonight, but the match has been canceled due to illness on the Stowe team, according to Harwood Athletic Director Ian Fraunfelder. The schools will look to schedule a makeup date soon, he said.

The Highlanders next game is Dec. 27 on the road vs. Rutland.

GYMNASTICS

Brattleboro 114.35, Harwood 112.45: The Harwood gymnastics team fell just shy of a win in a dual meet against Brattleboro on Wednesday. 

Anna Wulf was second in the vault, third in the floor exercise, and third in the all-around competition. Lily Martins was second in the beam, while Avery Delaney was second in the floor exercise and third in the vault. 

Harwood hosts Montpelier and Randolph at their home gym at Central Vermont Gymnastics Academy on Dec. 27.

WRESTLING

Harwood wrestlers travel for a meet on Dec. 27 Ausable Valley Middle/High School.
