Harwood XC Fun Runs hit their stride

Monday’s next-to-last Harwood Cross Country Fun Run doubled as both a race for community runners and a workout for some of the high school team’s returning members.
In all, 28 runners took part with the 3K a packed field as the popular choice for the Harwood athletes.
Patrick Hamel of Duxbury finished first in the 5K with a time of 21:04, followed by Serena Wilcox of Duxbury at 26:12, Fred Gillen of Duxbury at 26:14, Emilie Diller of Waterbury at 30:44, and Heidi Higgins Cutler at 32:36.
In the 3K Vince Wing of Waterbury Center finished first with a time of 12:33, followed by Chapin Rivers of Duxbury at 13:00, Brody Hackett of Waterbury at 13:59, Nicky Service of Waitsfield at 14:49, Kevin McElroy of Duxbury at 15:11, Mason Jones of Warren at 15:40, Beckett McElroy of Duxbury at 15:39, Trey Isham of Duxbury at 15:39, Victoria Grace of Waterbury at 15:46, Julia Cisz of Duxbury at 16:06, Pippa Diller of Duxbury at 16:20, Liv Kielich of Fayston at 17:13, Harmony Devoe of Warren at 18:19, Willis McDonough of Fayston at 18:25, Colin Smith of Duxbury at 18:44, Avery Derner of Waterbury at 18:47, Alex Isham of Duxbury at 18:49, Ingrid Westervelt of Warren at 24:00, Bill Westervelt of Warren at 24:24, Ryder Lessor and Heather Lessor of Moretown at 30:48.
There was no Kids Run since the youngest participant, Ryder Lessor, opted to run the 3K race with his mom.
The final Harwood Union Summer Fun Run will be held on Monday, Aug. 25. Registration starts at 6 p.m. and the Kids Race first at 6:15 p.m. followed by the 3K/5K. Cost is $5 per runner; kids age 6 and under are free. Proceeds support the Harwood Union High School Cross Country team’s trip to Belfast, Maine, this fall to compete in the Maine Festival of Champions.
