Volunteers needed to plan local events marking the U.S. & Vermont’s 250th anniversaries

September 9, 2025 | By Waterbury Roundabout

A new town committee is assembling to prepare for celebrations that will mark the 250th birthdays of the United States and Vermont and its first meeting is this Thursday.

The Waterbury Select Board approved creating the committee that will oversee local activities to mark the semiquincentennial: the 250th  anniversaries of the United States in 2026 and the Republic of Vermont in 2027.

An information session for volunteers will be held on Thursday, 6-7 p.m., in the Steele Community Room at the Municipal Complex. The meeting also will be streamed online via Zoom

Waterbury’s local committee will join dozens of others across the state as part of the state’s observance of its 250th Anniversary. Gov. Phil Scott created a statewide commission by executive order in 2020 for the occasion.

The state group is charged to “engage residents, visitors, educators and students, cultural institutions, historical societies, the business community and our state and local governments to participate in the recognition of the importance of our nation’s fight for freedom and how it still resonates in society today.”

Waterbury’s committee will coordinate and communicate regarding all 250th-related activities taking place in Waterbury. It will create and maintain a calendar of events, promote projects, assist in fundraising, and communicate about the key events around the historic celebration.

The committee is expected to be in service through December 2027, keeping with the timeline established for the state commission.

More information is online on the VT250 page of the Waterbury town website. To volunteer, complete the online application form or contact committee organizer Cheryl Casey with an email to ccasey@waterburyvt.com.
