Road Work | Oct. 27-31

October 24, 2025 | By Lisa Scagliotti

Weekly Road Work reports are assembled with information from the Vermont Agency of Transportation on projects in the region, the Waterbury Public Works Department, and other local highway departments for projects in Waterbury and neighboring communities as necessary.

Motorists are reminded to drive with caution through work zones and to follow posted speed limits. Speeding fines are doubled in work areas.

Work on the Stowe Street bridge is nearing completion. If all goes as scheduled, this should be the final week of work on site.

Bus service returns to Lincoln Street

The Lincoln Street Park & Ride lot reopened on Monday, Oct. 20. This Monday, Oct. 27, commuter bus service by GMT and RCT will return to the Lincoln Street lot and bus stop to resume their normal service.

Some final work on the bridge project remains for this week, starting on Tuesday.

Tuesday-Friday, Oct. 28-31:

  • Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on Stowe Street and Lincoln Street between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Flaggers will be in place to assist motorists through the work zone.

  • On Tuesday, Oct. 28, crews will pave the remaining four driveways within the project area.

  • Throughout the week, crews will pressure wash and apply a waterproof silane sealer to any exposed concrete on the bridge structure.

A final step in the project process before completion is to fine-tune the traffic signal at the bridge intersection with Route 100.

The Stowe Street bridge construction is a $4.34 million Vermont Agency of Transportation project replacing the two-lane bridge built in 1928 over the Thatcher Brook near the intersection of Stowe Street, Vermont Route 100 and Blush Hill Road.

Also in Waterbury

Motorists will notice new electronic signboards on Vermont Route 100 near the Interstate 89 on/off ramps. They are alerting drivers to upcoming night work scheduled for Nov. 2-11. The Agency of Transportation says there is work needed on the bridge over the interstate which will be done during overnight shifts. Between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily, the stretch of Rt. 100 at the interchange involving the bridge over the interstate will be reduced to one travel lane for the work to proceed.

Duxbury-Bolton

The town of Bolton has a road repair and slope stabilization project underway on Duxbury Road that will have a section of the roadway closed until Nov. 18. (River Road in Duxbury turns into Duxbury Road in Bolton.)

The approximate 1/4-mile stretch affected is between the Long Trail footbridge over the Winooski River and Honey Hollow Road. All vehicle traffic through this section will need to use U.S. Route 2 between Jonesville and Waterbury. Hikers on the Long Trail and other walkers can use a flagged temporary detour across private land. This detour is not open to cyclists or any motorized vehicles.

The work is needed after flooding caused erosion damage to the road and riverbank in 2024. The project is weather-dependent and may wrap up sooner than Nov. 18. The Bolton town website will have updates posted as needed during the project.

More information is available on the Green Mountain Club website.

Interstate 89: Waterbury-Montpelier southbound

This project involves removing the existing surface pavement and paving two separate new courses of asphalt. This is a two-year, 10.5-mile resurfacing project to rebuild both travel lanes.

Motorists should continue to expect delays, especially during the hours listed below, due to southbound lane closures between Exit 10 Waterbury/Stowe and Exit 8 Montpelier.

The speed limit is lowered to 55 mph and fines are doubled in the project zone.

Crews have completed new guardrail installation throughout the project area for the 2025 construction season. Some shoulder work will continue this week.

Monday-Friday, Oct. 27-31:

Between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., crews will continue project clean-up work ahead of winter shutdown.

Work will resume on this project next spring. The targeted completion is mid-August 2026.
