Road Work | Sept. 2-5

August 30, 2025 | By Lisa Scagliotti

Weekly Road Work reports are assembled with information from the Vermont Agency of Transportation on projects in the region, the Waterbury Public Works Department, and other local highway departments for projects in Waterbury and neighboring communities as necessary.

Motorists are reminded to drive with caution through work zones and to follow posted speed limits. Speeding fines are doubled in work areas.

No work is planned at any construction sites on Monday this week, given the Labor Day holiday.

Late Wednesday, Aug. 27, the new Stowe Street bridge opened for traffic and Lincoln Street was reopened as well. Over the Labor Day holiday weekend, no work will be taking place.

Crews will return on Tuesday, Sept. 2, and motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic both on the bridge and on Lincoln Street, with flaggers assisting.

Near the project site, the northbound shoulder on Vermont Route 100 will remain closed to traffic until the project is complete. At times during work hours, the northbound travel lane is also impacted, with northbound traffic and vehicles turning onto Blush Hill Road sharing a lane. Motorists should anticipate delays in this stretch given the construction activity.

The latest update from project officials notes that the lines painted on the bridge are temporary as work to complete the project continues. Additional features, including adding the sidewalk and curbs on the bridge and landscaping around the project, still need to be done. Work on the traffic signal also remains.

The schedule anticipates several more weeks before the project is completed.

Work for Tuesday-Friday, Sept. 2-5:

  • Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., crews will continue grading the side slopes along the streambank at the bridge site and preparing the area for landscaping.

  • Crews will also place the last of the stone fill and prepare the subbase for the upcoming curb and sidewalk construction.

  • There is no nighttime activity scheduled this week.

  • Project officials remind the public that all dates in the schedule are subject to change.

The Stowe Street bridge construction is a $4.34 million Vermont Agency of Transportation project replacing the two-lane bridge built in 1928 over the Thatcher Brook near the intersection of Stowe Street, Vermont Route 100 and Blush Hill Road. The new bridge will be wider with three lanes, shoulders and a sidewalk, including a dedicated turning lane for traffic headed north from Street onto Rt. 100.

Work began in early June with demolition starting after the bridge was closed on June 19. It reopened on Aug. 26.

Project reminders:

  • Motorists are asked to stay alert and not follow trucks while traveling through the work zone.

  • The Lincoln Street Park and Ride lot remains closed, with a temporary lot available downtown at the State Office Complex along Park Row at the end of Randall Street. Commuter buses also are using that lot, with the Rural Community Transit buses also stopping at Shaw’s on Rt. 100.

  • The town is providing shuttle service around the bridge closure for local residents who rely on it for pedestrian access to Vermont Route 100. Contact Town Manager Tom Leitz to arrange for that transportation (802-244-4300 or tleitz@waterburyvt.com).

Duxbury: Crossett Hill Rd/Rt. 100

Duxbury officials announced the start of a project on Tuesday, Aug. 26, to repair the intersection of Crossett Hill Road with Vermont Route 100. This work is expected to take until next Wednesday, Sept. 3, with a break for the Labor Day holiday weekend, they said.

The project will focus on the southbound side of the Y-shaped intersection. It will involve grinding up and removing the old pavement, hammering ledge in the existing ditch, and repaving the roadway.

Traffic will still have access to the intersection, but motorists are asked to slow down when entering the work area. The work is being done by S.T. Paving.

Motorists should continue to expect significant delays, especially during peak travel hours, due to multiple southbound lane closures between Exit 10 Waterbury/Stowe and Exit 8 Montpelier.

The speed limit is lowered to 55 mph and fines are doubled in the project zone.

No work is scheduled for Monday, the Labor Day holiday.

This week, from Tuesday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., work continues along the shoulders of the highway, particularly with guardrail installation.

This is a two-year, 10.5-mile resurfacing project to rebuild both travel lanes. The project is anticipated to last through this construction season and next summer, with completion targeted by Aug. 15, 2026, according to the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
