The Vermont Agency of Transportation, with contractor Frank W. Whitcomb Construction Corp., will resurface 15.6 miles of highway between now and October, according to VTrans.

The project will span from mile marker 63 (which is 0.8 mi. south of Waterbury’s Exit 10) to mile marker 78.6 (0.5 mi. north of Exit 11 in Richmond). The project will include the on- and off-ramps at both the Exit 10 (Waterbury) and Exit 11 (Richmond) interchanges. The completion date for this work is expected to be in October.

The work will involve milling the existing pavement, patching, pothole repairs, crack sealing, and two layers of new pavement.

Also included will be pavement markings, guardrail rehabilitation and other highway-related items.

Whitcomb is scheduled to begin milling operations on Thursday, June 11, just south of the Richmond Exit 11 on-ramp. The crew will then work its way south to Waterbury.

Work hours for Thursday and Friday this week are anticipated to be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Construction hours will vary throughout the project, involving both daytime and nighttime activity, depending upon the location of work. Weekly updates will be provided with anticipated working hours each week.

The construction work required will mean that one lane of traffic will be closed during construction activities. Motorists should anticipate significant traffic disruptions, particularly during the morning and afternoon peak travel hours.

To minimize delays, motorists are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes.

The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 55 mph and will be strictly enforced as the safety of the workers and motorists is of the utmost importance, VTrans officials said. Fines are doubled in construction zones.

In announcing the project, VTrans said it appreciates the public’s “patience and understanding as we work to enhance the road infrastructure for safer and more efficient travel.”
